Vaccines - Post-splenectomy prophylaxis

After splenectomy, the absence of antibodies allows for rapid proliferation of encapsulated organisms (S. pneumonia, N. meningitides, H. influenza.)

S. pneumonia is the MCC of sepsis in post-splenectomy patients.

Required vaccinations

  • S. pneumonia (PCV13 followed by PPSV23 8 weeks later). Revaccinate with PPSV23 five years later and at age 65.
  • Meningococcal
  • H. influenzae type B
  • TDaP, HAV, HVB according to standard guidelines
