Risk factor

Living in endemic areas (Puerto Rico) for > 1 month

Presentation

  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Malabsorption (esp. B12 and folate megaloblastic anemia)
  • Glossitis, cheilosis, pallor, pedal edema

Diagnosis

Small intestinal mucosal biopsy (shows blunting of villi and infiltration of lymphocytes, plasma cells, and eosinophils)

Differential diagnosis

Celiac disease (history of travek favors Sprue), infectious diarrhea (get a stool tests)
