Etiology

  • Obstruction (cancer)
  • Congenital (CF, alpha 1)
  • Immunodeficiencies
  • Post-infectious (Aspergillus, TB)
  • Systemic disease (RA, Sjogren)
  • Toxic inhalation

Symptoms

  • Cough
  • Mucopurulent sputum (high volume)
  • Hemoptysis

Diagnosis

  • HRCT (confirm dx)
  • Sputum analysis (microbiological dx)
  • Bronchoscopy for focal disease (evaluate local airway obstruction)
  • Diffuse disease: evaluate immune deficiency, systemic disease (CF, alpha 1)

Treatment

  • Antibiotics
  • Steroids
  • Physiotherapy
  • Resection/ transplantation for severe disease
